The Delaware Geographic Data Committee (DGDC) honored the organizing committee of Delaware GIS Day 2017 with an award for its dedication to outstanding service to the Delmarva GIS Community.

The 2017 GIS Day Committee, chaired by the School of Public Policy and Administration's Nicole Minni, received the Delmarva Geographic Community Service Award at the 2018 Delmarva GIS Conference for its work in organizing GIS Day, an international holiday providing a forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in society.

Along with Minni, committee members Art Walker, Danielle Lamborn, Darin Dell, Megan Nehrbas, Miriam Pomilio, Debbie Sullivan, Betsy Caufield, and Michael Hanna played a pivotal part in organizing local tours of the GIS industry to area schools. In 2017, three schools with a total of 301 students received a hands-on tour of the GIS industry.

Minni, a GIS and graphics specialist within the Institute for Public Administration's Water Resources Center, was previously honored individually by the DGDC with the 2008 Geographic Community Service Award. Minni currently serves as the chair on the organizing committee for GIS Day 2018, which will be held at the Air Command Mobility Museum in Dover on November 14, 2018.

In memory of the late Vernon Svatos, the Delmarva Geographic Community Service Award is a prestigious honor presented to an individual or group that has demonstrated outstanding service to the Delmarva GIS Community.  It is the intention of the award to recognize those who, either through a single effort or project or through consistent commitment, supported or fostered the geographic community.

The Delaware Geographic Data Committee is a cooperative effort among government, the academic sector, and the private sector to build a Delaware GIS Community and improve the coordination of the use of GIS tools and spatial data in Delaware. The DGDC is established in Delaware state law at 29 Delaware Code, Chapter 91, Subchapter IV to ensure the availability of geospatial data, promote the use and sharing of that data and of GIS software and tools, establish data standards, and support a community of geospatial data providers and geospatial data users in Delaware.
