Alumni Engagement Opportunities

SPPA Career Mentor Program

What is the SPPA Career Mentor Program?

The SPPA Career Mentor Program is sponsored by the board of the Alumni of Public Policy and Administration.  The program is designed to:

  • Facilitate mentoring relationships between alumni and friends of SPPA and current students.
  • Link current students looking for career advice or internship opportunities to alumni and friends of SPPA working in a related field.
  • Help students integrate academic excellence with professional practice.
  • Bring awareness to careers available for those with degrees from SPPA.

Mentorship experiences may vary based on the individual needs of the student and the capabilities of the mentor.  Students may contact mentors asking for general career advice, job shadowing opportunities, and/or internship opportunities.  Students may reach out to mentors just once or a lasting relationship may ensue. 

Faculty, staff, and the Student Association of Policy and Administration (SAPA) may also reach out to mentors.  Mentors may be asked to participate in SPPA or SAPA events and publications that are highlighting careers in public service.

How do I become a mentor?

To become a mentor, fill out the questionnaire.  Once you are registered, SPPA will identify appropriate connections based on student and school needs.  Finding a fit may take some time; however, once a once a match is made, the student will contact you.

Alumni Association

The School of Public Policy & Administration Alumni Association, known as the Alumni of Public Policy and Administration (APPA), works to enhance communication among alumni, support their professional growth, and augment SPPA efforts to provide educational and professional development opportunities for students.

All persons who are graduates of one of the school's undergraduate and graduate degree programs are members. Students who complete at least one full year of graduate study but have not yet achieved a degree are also eligible.

The mission

The mission of the Alumni of Public Policy and Administration alumni association is:

  1. To promote SPPA, its alumni, faculty, staff, students and programs;
  2. To assist the faculty and staff in creating, supporting, implementing, and reviewing academic and programmatic activities;
  3. To provide educational and professional development opportunities for current students;
  4. To facilitate communication and provide opportunities for alumni to continue their intellectual, professional, and social development through their association with the School.
  5. To assist the school with the recruitment of students; and
  6. To foster the financial well-being of the school.

Activities

APPA contributes time and energy each year to the annual alumni social, held during UD's Alumni Weekend, and the biannual Alumni Scholarship Fundraiser, which raises funds for the SPPA Alumni Graduate Student Empowerment Fund. We encourage individual donations to this fund as well, which can be made via the online giving form.  Just write SPPA Alumni Graduate Student Empowerment Fund in the "Special Instructions" portion of the giving form.
