Many SPPA students enter competitive fellowship training programs after completing their graduate degree. Here are some:
Presidential Management Fellows
Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) program attracts outstanding master's, law, and doctoral-level students to the Federal service. As a PMF, your assignments may involve domestic or international issues, technology, science, criminal justice, health, financial management, and many other fields in support of public service programs.
The School of Public Policy and Administration must nominate candidates in the early fall. If you are interested in learning more about the PMF program or being nominated, please contact Dr. Flynn.
Capital City Fellows Program (Washington, DC)
The Capital City Fellows Program (CCFP) is attracts recent graduates of master's degree programs in public administration, public policy, urban planning, and related fields to work for the city of Washington, DC. Candidates compete for two-year fellowship appointments during which they complete four six-month rotations in different city agencies, including the Office of the City Administrator, Office of Personnel, Office of the Chief Financial Officer, Department of Human Services, Department of Motor Vehicles, Department of Transportation, and the Metropolitan Police Department.
City of Long Beach (CA) Management Assistant Program
For the past 25 years, the City of Long Beach Management Assistant Program has been attracting the country’s top graduate students and professionals to work in the exciting field of local government. The Management Assistant Program, California’s oldest municipal management development program, provides talented individuals with the experience to gain the knowledge and skills to be effective local government practitioners. The Management Assistant Program is a unique and rewarding opportunity to work in local government and make a difference in a community.
City of Savannah (GA) Management Intern Program
The City of Savannah's Local Government Management Internship Program is designed to recruit talented individuals to the organization and prepare them for successful careers in local government. Candidates must be pursuing a Masters Degree in Public Administration/Affairs (MPA). Candidates must have a graduate school overall G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher. Interns have a one year appointment with the City.
Health and Human Services Emerging Leaders Program
The United States Department of Health and Human Services Emerging Leaders Program is intended for the best graduates who are eager to make contributions to HHS. The program will allow you to explore diverse career fields, involving your educational background, within the Department of Health and Human Services, while providing you with the skills and experience needed for a career with the Federal Government. During the two-year program you will have unique professional opportunities, including close interaction with various agency executives, as well as with public, private, non-profit, and advocacy organizations.
The program provides training in departmental core competencies, job rotations to gain familiarity with people and programs at HHS, mentors to provide career development advice and support , and training in technical competencies based on your career path.
International City/County Management (ICMA) Local Government Management Fellows
ICMA welcomes applicants and host communities to apply for the Local Government Management Fellowship program. This highly competitive career-development opportunity is designed to generate interest in local government careers among recent master's program graduates. Recent graduates and students enrolled in public administration, public policy, or related master's degree programs at NASPAA-member schools are eligible to apply to this fellowship program. (The School of Public Policy and Administration is a member of NASPAA.)
Selected Fellows are placed in a full-time management-track local government positions, shaped by direct mentorship under senior government leaders and rotational assignments. This is an annual fellowship program with applications available to students beginning in late summer/early fall each year.
Maryland Governor's Policy Fellows
The Governor’s Policy Fellows Program is a two-year, post-graduate program that seeks to bring the nation’s most distinguished policy graduates to serve in the Maryland State Government. The program provides participants with broad exposure to the development, implementation, and evaluation of public policy at the State level while providing the State direct access to an underutilized pool of talent. Recent recipients of graduate degrees in public policy, public administration, urban planning, law and related fields are welcome to apply. Selected applicants are chosen for an interview, and up to four fellows are selected each year. After selection, fellows serve three eight-month rotations in State agencies.
New York State Public Management Institute program
For many years, the Public Management Institute (PMI) has served as an important vehicle for bringing exceptional individuals with the capacity for leadership to careers in New York State government. Through carefully crafted job assignments, coupled with relevant training experiences, the PMI prepares participants with master's degrees in public administration or a related field for management positions of increasing responsibility within State agencies. During the two-year program, interns serve in a professional position within a State agency. In addition to on-the-job learning, interns experience specialized training, rotational assignments, and mentoring for professional guidance and advice. These program components have been designed to provide the interns with the tools for building a management career in New York State government. Unlike typical short-term internships, the PMI is a full-time, paid traineeship.
Pinellas County (FL) Management Associate Program
The Pinellas County Management Associate Program is an intensive, one-year postgraduate internship program for recent upper-level college graduates. The work is challenging and will help you develop the necessary skills to become a high-quality manager and innovative supervisor of county government.
You will actively participate in the Pinellas County community by interacting with civic leaders and working in county administration.
