Tuesday, March 13, 5 pm, Kirkbride 004: “Contemporary Issues in Public Administration” undergraduate and graduate course, Ed Freel's course
“Leadership and Culture: Reexamining Models” Are our public and private organizations handicapped by powerful but narrow models of strong leaders that are continually reinforced in the media, sports, movies and other vehicles? Do our public administration schools need to "undo" those deep cultural biases before being able to teach more complex evidence-based models of leadership? But are those classroom lessons then overwhelmed by the simplistic assumptions evident in day-to-day organizational behaviors?
Wednesday, March 14, 7 pm, University Courtyard Marriot: Presentation to Faculty, Students, Alumni, Community followed by a reception
“Five Great Ideas for the Future of Public Service” The field of public administration has developed strong themes over the last century and a half. All of those insights are still relevant but need to be recast in modern terms that can underscore the worth of public service as an attractive and important career path, as well as the worth of government as a necessary investment for our society.
